Massive Ellenville fire brings out tri-county response

Fire remains under investigation

ELLENVILLE – The fire that destroyed 613 Automotive at 188 South Main Street in Ellenville early Thursday morning destroyed 20 vintage cars and several pieces of equipment being used by a production company using the facilities to film an HBO movie.

The used car dealer’s building was totally destroyed with the remnant being leveled later in the day.

Police Chief Phillip Mattracion said three families of nearby residences had to be relocated as a result of damage from the fire.

“The absolute amazing thing to come out of this atrocity of disaster is the fact that not one firefighter, law enforcement officer, or civilian was injured in this multi-facets operation,” the chief said. “This is a true testament to the professionalism, training, and dedication that the brave men and women who in the face of grave danger, volunteer to respond and leave their families behind at a moment’s notice, not knowing whether they will return.”

Fifteen fire departments from Ulster, Sullivan and Orange counties, along with the State Department of Environmental Conservation, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, State Police in Wawarsing, Ellenville Police, Ulster County Arson Task Force, Ellenville Water Department, Napanoch Ladies Auxiliary, and Ellenville Rescue Squad assisted at the scene.
